Hot Water System Problems: Repair or Replace?
By TradieCorner Team · · 1 min read

A failing hot water system usually announces itself at the worst moment — a cold shower on a winter morning. Understanding what might be wrong helps you have a useful conversation with your plumber and make a good decision quickly.
Common problems
- No hot water at all — often a power, gas supply, pilot or thermostat issue
- Water that's only lukewarm or runs out quickly
- Water leaking from the tank or valves
- Rusty or discoloured hot water
- Rumbling or banging noises from the tank
Signs it may be time to replace
A tank that is leaking from the body itself, rather than from a valve, usually can't be repaired. Age matters too: if your system is getting on and repairs are becoming frequent, replacing it may make more sense than another fix. Your plumber can tell you how old it is from the compliance plate.
Options to discuss
- Electric storage systems
- Gas storage or continuous-flow (instantaneous) systems
- Heat pump systems
- Solar hot water
The best choice depends on your household size, the space available, whether you have gas connected, and how you want to balance upfront cost against running costs. Government rebates and energy rules change, so ask your plumber what currently applies in your state.
