Gutter Cleaning and Maintenance: A Seasonal Checklist
By TradieCorner Team · · 1 min read

Gutters are easy to forget because you rarely see inside them. But when they overflow, water can find its way into eaves, ceilings and walls. A little regular attention prevents most of those problems.
Why gutters matter
- Overflowing gutters can push water into the roof space and ceilings
- Water pooling against walls and foundations encourages damp
- Leaf litter and standing water attract pests and mosquitoes
- In bushfire-prone areas, dry leaves in gutters are a fire risk
A seasonal routine
- Before storm season: clear gutters and check downpipes are flowing
- Late autumn: clear leaves after trees have dropped them
- Before bushfire season, in at-risk areas: remove dry debris
- After big storms: look for sagging sections, leaks or blockages
DIY or professional?
Working on ladders and roofs is one of the most common causes of serious falls at home. For anything above a single storey, or any roof you can't access safely, a professional gutter cleaner or roofer with the right equipment is the safer choice.
Ask about gutter guards and repairs
Gutter guards can reduce how often you need to clean, especially under trees. While someone is up there, ask them to check for rust, leaking joints and sagging brackets — small repairs now prevent bigger ones later.
