It's natural to wonder why a job that sounds the same can be quoted at very different amounts. Rather than guess at numbers, it helps to understand what actually goes into a quote — because those are the things you can influence.
The size and complexity of the job
More work takes more time, and complex work takes more skill. A simple like-for-like replacement is usually quicker than a job that involves changing the layout or fixing a hidden problem.
Materials and products
The type and quality of materials you choose has a large effect on the total. Supplying your own fixtures can change the price, but check with your tradie first — some prefer to supply materials so they can stand behind the whole job.
Access and location
- Tight roof spaces, second storeys and awkward access take longer
- Travel time and distance from the tradie's base
- Parking and site conditions
Urgency and timing
Emergency call-outs and work outside normal hours are often charged differently from planned, weekday jobs. If the job isn't urgent, saying so can give you more flexibility on both timing and price.
Approvals and paperwork
Some work needs permits, inspections or certificates. Ask whether these are included in the quote, or whether they'll be a separate cost.
Things you can't see yet
Older homes and hidden damage can change a job once the work is opened up. A trustworthy tradie will explain this up front and tell you how any extra costs will be handled.
Then use our checklist for comparing tradie quotes to make sure you're comparing like with like.
