How to Compare Tradie Quotes: Look Beyond the Price
By TradieCorner Team · · 2 min read

You've asked a few tradies to quote and the numbers have come back. One is much lower than the others, and one is much higher. Before you reach for the cheapest, it's worth checking that you're comparing like with like.
Compare the scope, not just the total
A quote is only meaningful next to the work it covers. Line up each quote and check they describe the same job. A lower price often means something has been left out — cleaning up, disposing of old materials, or a part of the work you assumed was included.
What a clear quote should show
- A description of the work in plain language
- Labour and materials, ideally itemised
- Whether GST is included in the price
- Start date and how long the work should take
- Payment terms, including any deposit
- Anything that is specifically not included
Ask about materials and quality
Two tradies can quote the same job using very different products. Ask which brands or grades they've allowed for, and whether you can choose your own fixtures. A price built on entry-level materials will naturally come in lower than one that assumes something better.
Understand how changes are handled
Sometimes a job turns up surprises once work starts. Ask how variations are handled: will you be told the cost before extra work is done, and will it be confirmed in writing? A tradie with a clear process here is usually a tradie who plans well.
Think about the whole picture
- How quickly and clearly did they respond?
- Did they ask sensible questions about the job?
- Are their licence and insurance details in order?
- Do they offer any guarantee on the work?
Price matters, but so do reliability and communication. The tradie who explains the job clearly and answers your questions properly is often the better choice, even if their quote isn't the lowest.
