Hiring a Carpenter for a Deck or Pergola — TradieCorner blog

A well-built deck or pergola can feel like an extra room. Getting it right starts with how you'll use the space, then moves to materials, approvals and choosing the right builder.

Start with how you'll use it

  • Dining and entertaining — how many people, and where does the table go?
  • Shade — full cover, partial shade or open slats?
  • Access — from which doors, and do you need steps or a ramp?
  • Lighting, power or a ceiling fan for evenings

Choosing materials

Hardwood decking looks beautiful and needs regular oiling. Treated pine is common for framing. Composite decking needs less maintenance and comes in many colours. For pergolas, timber, steel and aluminium frames each have different looks and upkeep. Ask your carpenter about how each option suits your climate and exposure.

Approvals

Whether you need council approval often depends on size, height above ground, how close it is to the boundary and whether it's attached to the house. Raised decks may also need balustrades. Check with your local council — our council regulations guide is a good starting point.

What to ask a carpenter

  • Can I see photos of decks or pergolas you've built?
  • How will the footings be done, and how deep will they go?
  • What fixings will you use, and are they suitable outdoors?
  • Who handles approvals and any engineering?
  • Is oiling or sealing included at the end?
