Why Tradie Quotes Vary So Much for the Same Job — TradieCorner blog

It's a common experience: ask three tradies to quote the same job and get back three noticeably different numbers. It's unsettling if you don't know why it happens — but most of the time, there's a straightforward explanation.

They may not be quoting the same job

The most common reason for a big gap is that the scope wasn't identical. One tradie might include cleanup, disposal or a warranty that another doesn't. A cheaper quote that excludes materials, or assumes easier access than you actually have, isn't really comparable.

Experience, demand and overheads differ

  • Established businesses often price in higher overheads — insurance, a registered office, staff — that a sole operator doesn't carry
  • A tradie who's flat out may quote higher simply because they don't need the work as much right now
  • Specialist experience with a particular job type can command a higher price, fairly
  • Materials sourced from different suppliers, or at different quality tiers, change the total

When a low quote is a warning sign

An unusually low quote is worth questioning rather than automatically accepting. It can mean corners are being cut, the scope is incomplete, or the business is unlicensed or uninsured. Ask what's included and confirm it matches the other quotes you've received.
