Red Flags to Watch for When Hiring a Tradie — TradieCorner blog

The overwhelming majority of Australian tradies are reliable, licensed and easy to deal with. But a small number aren't, and the damage from hiring the wrong one — financial or otherwise — can be significant. Knowing the warning signs early lets you walk away before that happens.

Pressure to decide immediately

Genuine tradies are usually busy, not pushy. Be wary of anyone who pressures you to sign or pay on the spot, insists a special price is only available today, or discourages you from getting a second opinion.

Reluctance to put anything in writing

A written quote protects both sides. If someone won't provide one, won't confirm the scope of work by text or email, or gives you a price that keeps shifting verbally, treat it as a sign to look elsewhere.

  • Large upfront deposits, especially in cash, before any work or materials are committed
  • No fixed business address, ABN or way to contact them other than a mobile number
  • Can't or won't provide licence details for regulated work
  • No online presence at all — no reviews, no website, no profile you can check

Trust your own instincts too

If something feels off during the first call or the first visit, it's worth listening to that. A good tradie won't mind you taking your time, checking their licence, or comparing them against another quote.
