How to Read Tradie Reviews Without Getting Fooled
By TradieCorner Team · · 1 min read

Reviews are one of the easiest ways to check a tradie before you hire them — but a five-star average on its own doesn't tell you much. A closer read usually reveals a lot more than the number does.
Look at the detail, not just the score
A review that describes the actual job — what was done, how communication went, whether the price matched the quote — is far more useful than a one-line rating. Genuine reviews tend to include specifics; vague, generic praise is worth reading with a bit of scepticism.
Check how the business responds
How a business handles a negative review often tells you more than the review itself. A professional, calm response to a complaint is a good sign. Defensive or aggressive replies are worth noting.
- Read a few of the lower-rated reviews, not just the top ones
- Look for reviews spread out over time, rather than a sudden cluster
- Check whether reviews mention the specific trade and type of job you need
- Cross-check the business on more than one platform if you can
Ask for references on bigger jobs
For anything significant — a renovation, a large install, a full rewire — it's reasonable to ask the tradie directly for a couple of past customers you can contact. Most established businesses are happy to provide them.
